2015 has been the best year so far with regards to my music and game development. While every year has ups and downs, I’ve done a lot of work in 2015 that I’m proud of.
At the start of the year I released my first game called Overlooker, made in roughly 20 days. It was also my first full soundtrack release and first attempt at pixel art. Although the game was short and a bit clunky, I got surprisingly positive feedback in comments and emails despite not promoting the game. I wrote a postmortem about it which you can read here.
After a few years of contributing synthesizer and sampling work the Arbitrator album Indoctrination of Sacrilege was released in February. Working with Rob Kukla was a ton of fun, and the end result is something I love to crank up! Having contributed to an album that also featured drums by Dirk Verbeuren and work by Sacha Laskow and Jens Bogren is pretty exciting.
I have had the pleasure of working with the very talented Jesper Tingvall on video games such as Spacecraft, Skeletal Dance Party, Monster in the Matrix, and Human Meatshield. We found out just a week ago that Skeletal Dance Party has been greenlit on Steam, and I’m currently working on more music for Spacecraft right now so I’m excited to see what we will do together in 2016!
The Isotope Softworks team has been working hard on PC/Dreamcast game Hypertension: Harmony of Darkness which I am doing soundtrack story work for. My 1 year anniversary working on the project came around at the start of December, and I’ve been having a blast working with this fantastic team. You can see a recent video showing some footage here, featuring my music. The game definitely has that classic old school survival horror / first person shooter vibe that I love!
In September I released Overlooker 2 which was much more ambitious than Overlooker 1. It had a full inventory system, more enemy types, more areas to explore, and many more basic features. Due to the tight time frame there are unfortunately some bugs and issues. It was a huge step up from Overlooker 1 though and I’m happy with the result! I again got a surprising amount of positive feedback despite not promoting the game.
My friend Nicolas updated the soundcloud page with a playlist of what he considers to be my best music. The soundcloud is the place to go to crank up some tunes! Nicolas is the co-admin of my Facebook and Soundcloud page and a dude I’m always bouncing music and game ideas back and forth off of. Along with the Overlooker and Overlooker 2 soundtracks, I released a solo album titled The Hagan Incision which you can find on my bandcamp page. He’s shown me some of his recent work and it is fantastic – I can’t wait for him to release it!
I also started up my own podcast called The Connorcast, which featured Michael Garoad Kelly (Composer of VA11 HALL-A) in episode 1 and Leandro Tokarevski (Creator of Multiverse: A Cosmic Conquest) in episode 2. I’ll most likely continue the podcast in 2016!
I may have forgotten a few things, but I think that covers most of 2015. Considering I’ve been going to university full time and working full time in the summer, I think I’ve done quite a bit of work!
My last university semester starts in a couple of days, and I plan for the first 4 months of 2016 to be quiet. I want to take a break (…my break consists of a 6 course semester…) and focus on my classes for the rest of my degree. I’ll be continuing work on Hypertension, Spacecraft, and Skeletal Dance Party during that time as well. When summer hits, I plan to work hard on my third game, new music, and some new projects that are currently in the planning stages! I’m also sitting on 2 heavy metal solo albums that need to be mixed/mastered, and those will most likely be released in 2016.
